ATS-optimised resume format (2025): what still works

In the US this is usually called a resume; in the UK and much of Europe it is a CV. The ATS rules are the same either way: the file must parse cleanly, and a human still decides.

An ATS-optimised format is not a secret template that “beats the robot.” Applicant tracking systems store and search applications. Your job is to make the text extractable and easy to filter — then make the evidence strong enough that a recruiter keeps reading.

What “ATS-friendly” actually requires in 2025

• Real text in the file (PDF with selectable text, or DOCX when the employer asks).
• Contact details in the body of the page, not only in a header/footer region some parsers skip.
• Plain section labels: Experience, Education, Skills.
• Consistent date ranges a parser can read (for example March 2021 – June 2024).
• Job title, employer, and dates in a predictable order for each role.

Layout choices that still work

Single-column layouts are safest for unusual designs, but a simple two-column layout can parse fine if copy-paste into a text editor still reads in a sensible order. Fancy skill bars, text inside images, and scanned pages are what break parsing — not modest design.

Keywords without stuffing

Put the terms a recruiter would search — role title, tools, licences — in the places they belong. Write the full phrase and the abbreviation once when both are natural. Hidden white text and keyword walls still read as deception when someone opens the parsed record.

2025 checklist before you export

1. Select-all in the PDF and paste into a plain text editor. If nothing pastes, re-export.
2. Confirm phone and email appear in the pasted text.
3. Confirm every role has title, employer, and dates.
4. Match the job’s required tools only where you truly used them.
5. Export a text PDF unless the posting demands Word.
